Nicole Casiano, nurse preceptor and Furdicia Morancie,RN, recently sat down with BronxNet to celebrate Nurses Month. In this interview, Nicole and Furdicia discussed how they provide care to individuals and what they do on a day-to-day basis.
As a nurse preceptor, Nicole works with different nurses in multiple neighborhoods to plan their tasks for the day and mentor them in their career. She finds that helping nurses on the field with their day-to-day work also improved her own skillset. While each day is unpredictable, she values the opportunity to work with many patients and team members while bringing a positive mindset. She has been in home care for over 16 years and loves meeting people where they are and experiencing others’ cultures in their homes. When asked about nurses trying to get into the field, but worried about the high hurdles, Nicole said “I think it’s worth it. It’s not an easy career and getting here is not easy, but it’s well worth it.”
Furdicia works with patients that come from all walks of life, needing different care programs depending on their needs. This involves taking care of a patient’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. One of her patients went through a traumatic event where she had to not only look after the patient’s physical needs, but to be there for her during a difficult time. What she loves about home care is being able to see the patient’s journey from when they first need help to fully recovering. When talking about her patients she said, “Sometimes we’re the only person the patient sees the entire week. They will literally tell you ‘I don’t what would happen without you.'”
